How does bringing in outside vocalists change the identity of a band that built its name on instrumentals?

I haven't really listened to any of their prior work. I immediately fell in love with this album because of Time Moves Slow, though. The vocals feel like they ground some of the songwriting in more traditional structures that do a great job of complimenting some of the meatier jazz tracks.
