Great pick! It's probably been a year or two since I last listened. I always loved the ironic, tongue-in-cheek sounds juxtaposed against some of the more emotional lyrical delivery of that time/genre. Crap Kraft Dinner, Down With Prince and Shining Escalade were favorites. We'll see what sticks out this time around.
Just realized we're listening to the bonus edition. I have the original album and landed on A-B-C which, unfortunately, isn't included on the bonus edition. Worth shouting out this track for it's satire of hip-hop's braggadocious lyrics. So funny that it throws down in such a uniquely Hot Chip way in the outro.
Such a unique album. I've always loved Hot Chip's synth-pop sounds. So many songs are tongue-in-cheek ear worms with unexpected melodies and interesting instrumentation. For a debut this really has a cohesive sound to me. The lyrical content and the frequent deadpan vocal delivery has always held it back a bit, though. There's a ton of hipster angst that feels fun at first but starts to overwhelm the music as the album wears on. The maturation that takes place on The Warning has always pulled me in more.
I agree The Warning is ultimately the more mature record, I find this a surprisingly creative and cohesive record for a debut though. It is very hipster, however.
Interesting. That song was never on the original UK release. It is featured on the bonus edition on Apple Music, but not Spotify. Mysterious…
