Being as Elvis represents about 30% of my current theme—1960s movie soundtracks—I thought I’d open up a general discussion about him. More specifically, his gospel catalog. I know. Not everyone listens to gospel music. It’s definitely an acquired taste. And honestly, it’s one of the genres I personally don’t listen to very often. Hardly ever, actually. Every once in a while, though, I’ll be shuffling through my library and a gospel song will pop up. I only have a handful: BeBe & CeCe Winans, Whitney Houston, and Elvis. Like I said, gospel is one genre I’ve never really been able to get into. Elvis is the exception. Take that with whatever grain of salt you want, but his gospel music has always connected with me. Maybe it’s because it never feels forced. There’s something about the way he sings it that feels completely natural and sincere. To me, Elvis’s voice was a gift from Heaven, and when he sang gospel, it felt like he was returning the favor. What are your thoughts, if any, you have on the subject?
