How does Pickett's shouting, gospel-rooted delivery hit you compared to smoother soul singers of the same era?

It’s not on this album, but his cover of the Beatles Hey Jude exemplifies this. Even though McCartney has a great voice, I don’t really like the Beatles version much. Pickett rescued it for me.
