I was really excited going into this one because Sango is one of my favorite producers, but after my first listen, I thought it was just…okay. I don’t think the album felt cohesive enough for me, although I also think that was kind of the point. It felt like he was pulling inspiration from all over the country—DC go-go, New Orleans bounce, Detroit hip-hop, and a bunch of other regional sounds—and I can definitely appreciate what he was trying to do. I just don’t think it all came together as well as I wanted it to. That said, as someone from the DMV, hearing him incorporate go-go was such a cool surprise. It’s one of those genres that people outside the area usually don’t know much about, let alone understand well enough to work into their music in a way that feels intentional. That moment honestly made me smile. The back half of the album is where it really picked up for me and ended up saving the project a bit. There are some great moments throughout, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of those albums that grows on me after a few more listens. But after my first impression, I wasn’t as blown away as I was hoping to be.
