Legend In Your Own Time takes a notably cool, ironic distance from its subject — is that detachment a strength or does it create emotional distance from the listener?

Isn't that just a storytelling perspective/device? To me, this feels like Carly telling her story through another person or character; wanting to become a musician for the fame only to realize that it's a solitary profession. I guess that detachment is helpful as a writer?
