If we look at the album as a portrayal of Black like at the time, then “I Love You Porgy” is an ode to Black love. This theme reappears in the track “Go Limp,” in which Simone tells the story of a young woman’s education from girlhood into adulthood. Where Porgy allows the female heroine to be sentimental, “Go Limp” shows the protagonist becoming political aware. Seeing the album as a young woman’s journey into Black activism, then this song makes good sense as it shows how the heroine views love before she learns about the evils of racism in the United States.
