Does the anachronistic pairing of 80s post-punk with a story set in 1770s Versailles feel inspired or gimmicky after a full listen?

definitely inspired. the movie itself is vastly misunderstood and often criticized for “not being historically accurate” when in actuality, that was never the point sofia coppola was trying to make. she never intended for it to be historically accurate, instead she wanted to share it from a young girls perspective. she captured the immense pressures, isolation, recklessness, and boredom that a teenage girl would feel if thrown into this position. the soundtrack fits perfectly bc it captures the recklessness, the yearning, the boredom, and the desire to be seen as “grownup” that comes with adolescence.
