How does the horn section change what these songs are, compared to imagining them as a straight guitar-bass-drums rock record?

A lot of these songs are good without the horn sections, but the character it adds truly elevate these songs beyond just-good alt-rock. The horns almost act like the lead guitar, usually having the lead melody each song that can take the base sound into more ska, funk or jazz-leaning territory, if not all 3 at once.

Totally agree. It shifts the west coast punk/ska sound into soul/jazz/funk. It’s pretty infectious.
