I was thinking about how book clubs work the other day. Most of the time everyone, including the host, are experiencing the book selection for the first time. While I've loved revisiting so many great albums from the past in The Pocket, I felt it might be time to dive into something new together. I found this album in a random instagram video. Someone was sharing five records they recently picked up. The clip for this one definitely caught my attention. Hopefully we discover something cool!

@Jangles that's a good point. We did that with the Clipse album when it came out. Also when we did Aretha Franklins I Never Loved A Man the Way I Loved You we were all for the most part experiencing it for the first time. How often do we get to experience an album for the first time with a group of people like we did as teens?

@Jangles this one sounds interesting, and I have always liked the idea of doing albums you are not familiar with as part of the clubs your run

@PressPlayersClub that's such a good point. Before streaming music, opening up an album was such an event!

I like how this is considered cosmic jazz. I definitely feel it. Birth of Creation slaps. The saxophonist has an amazing tone.

Awesome first spin. I love how much groove they have. (Perfect for The Pocket!) The sax demanded so much attention. Just incredible tone with equal parts groovy melody and improvisational emotion. I need to go back and really pay attention to the drums and keys. There are so many layers and textures that I felt but didn't really focus on. @BlackPlastic it looks like these guys are from the UK. Have you heard of them?

Bumping this one for anyone that hasn't given it a spin yet. I keep coming back to it between other albums. Super deep grooves in the futuristic jazz.

A question for anyone and everyone: Can an album be truly great if it only hits under the right conditions — or does real greatness mean it works anytime, anywhere? This album is probably one of the most exciting discoveries I've found since Sound Club started. I don't know how often I'll revisit it, though. For me, this is a "need to get stuff done" or a "late night weekend vibes" spin. In those settings it feels absolutely massive. Otherwise, like I said, it may not get much run.
