Does Vienna land as comforting advice or as something more melancholy when you actually sit with the lyrics?

Id say a bit of both, there is a melancholy but in a way that it almost puts the lister in the shoes of the person Billy joel is giving the advice to, it's like hearing what you need to hear but not wanting to hear it

The older I get the more this song just devastates me, so I lean toward melancholy. Though, I think depending where you are in life the song is going take on a different meaning.

Side note - my local high school seniors made this their "senior song." 2026 I told them I was in high school when it originally came out. They really only saw the slow down, you crazy child part. I think the chord progression is amazing.
