Beat me to it haha! Very very nice album. Worth the wait and every song continues to grow on me. I've been in discussion about Poor Thang about who and what andand The Fall Off is by far one of the top 3 on here. But thats what music is about- artists such as Cole that make you just sit in your driveway and listen and cling to every word. Classic. Chef's Kiss.
@WorldOnShuffle I feel that. I have so many great music memories of sitting in the driveway, too captivated to turn off my car.
There's so much here. Usually I share thoughts along the way, but I think I just need to let this one play through and save the thoughts for the second spin.
I read a review of the album by Game (comical) and honestly I didn’t know if I liked his takes or not, I’ll find and share, but I did agree that Cole might’ve been able to edit a few songs on the back half for a little tighter curation of the full story
@harlanworld that’s kind of how I’m feeling about it so far. It feels like a cop out to say it’s too much, but I’ve been through it three times and I can’t make sense of it holistically. Some gems for sure, but it hasn’t landed for me yet,
@harlanworld also, looks like pitchfork gave it a 5.3/10. Their reviews can be pretty harsh.
@Jangles i am having a harder time with the back half than the front, but i just haven't given it as much listening intent so far.
i guess it's also really difficult to make 24 tracks that always add up and carry you up/down along the whole way.
You said it, @harlanworld - too much concept. This album feels like the seventh layer of inception. I just don't know what's going on anymore. Cole is obviously one of the greatest. His albums are a treat to listen to. The talent is special. The songs stick more often than not. This album is one of the few that feels like it's asking the listener to do too much. Or maybe I just don't feel like trying this hard. The overall idea of returning home at two stages of life is super simple and kind of interesting. I just feel like it tried way too hard for way too long and I got lost in it all. 8.0 for me.
