40's production has been called the emotional co-author of this album — how much credit does the sonic atmosphere deserve for the record's mood?

I definitely never gave Drake’s work enough credit for the atmospheric productions. This album definitely has a super cool ambiance to it. I can definitely hear its impact on more recent work.
