In a NO SKIPS first, we are debuting the new Nas album produced by DJ Premier, released today. A dream come true for many longtime listeners. Will it be another NO SKIPS classic? Let's listen.
Enjoyed this one a lot. I've listened to Illmatic a ton, but haven't really any other Nas more than once. This makes me think I should. The production on it might have been the most interesting part for me. It somehow walked the line of feeling like nostalgic 90s hip-hop and while also feeling fresh. NY State Of Mind Pt 3 was a favorite. Pause Tapes was cool for blending story with sound. Nasty Esco Nasir and Junkie had classic vibes. I happened to be listening to Low End Theory alongside this and the bridge between 90s and now really got me thinking. We're 30+ years removed from Illmatic and hip-hop of that era. The production had some new takes, but most of the album really feels like it's from that time. How much does innovation and exploration factor into an artists career and their place amongst their contemporaries? I'm not saying I prefer it, but I think I got a bit more out of Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition over at @William OldFishermenRecordClub. Anyways...enjoyed this one on multiple levels. Love that we got to spin a new release, too.
