About Sound Club
For generations, the album was how artists connected with listeners: a complete work, meant to be heard start to finish. The streaming era has steadily eroded that. Curated playlists, algorithmic song selection, instant access. More music, faster, but listened to less deeply.
Sound Club is a response to that. Its mission is to create a space to celebrate the art of the album, through a simple idea: book clubs for music. Clubs choose an album, listen to it in full, and discuss it in depth together. Each album comes with a listening guide and discussion topics designed to spark real conversation. No algorithms, no playlists. Just albums, and the people who love them, talking about why they matter.
The idea came from a real absence. Founder Michael Jenkins, who goes by Jangles on Sound Club, spent twenty years in marketing before finding himself at home with a new toddler and cut off from the music life he used to have. He missed his record nights in New York City, the post-show debates about desert-island albums, and the pandemic-era Zoom listening sessions with friends. So he built the place he wished existed.
Since launching in November 2025, Sound Club has grown into clubs run by members, with listening sessions both live in the app and in person. In October 2026 it relaunched with all-new apps for the web, iPhone and Android.
Because music deserves conversation.
How it works
- Join or create a club. Clubs form around a genre, an era, a city, a vibe or a community.
- Pick an album. Each club selects a record to listen to in full.
- Listen with context. Every album comes with a listening guide covering the artist, the album and what to listen for.
- Discuss it together. Ratings and discussion topics turn passive playback into real conversation.
- Meet up. Hosts run live listening rooms in the app and listening nights in person.
What makes it different
- Albums, not playlists. Sound Club is built around the album as a complete work, the way the artist intended it to be heard.
- People, not algorithms. Discovery happens through other humans: club hosts, fellow members and tastemakers who pick albums they believe in.
- Conversation, not consumption. The point isn't just to listen, it's to talk, the way a book club turns reading into discussion.
- Online and in person. Members listen and discuss on their own time in the app, and come together at listening sessions.
About the founder
Michael Jenkins (Jangles on Sound Club) is the founder of Sound Club. After twenty years in marketing at companies like Google and Samsung, he started the project at home with his first child in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, missing the music community he'd built over the years: hosting record nights in NYC, debating desert-island albums after shows, and running listening sessions with friends over Zoom during the pandemic. Sound Club began as his attempt to rebuild that sense of connection, with an open invitation for others to help shape it.
Quotes
From the founder
“We've never had more access to music and never spent less time really listening to it. Sound Club is about getting that back: sitting with an album, start to finish, and talking about it with people who care.”
“The album isn't dead. People still want the deep, shared experience of a great record. They just need a place to do it together.”
From the community
“This is a dope concept for an app and I support anything to get people critically thinking about art.”
“I love what you're creating here. It's a really cool idea that I think can grow into a much larger community.”
