From BlackPlasticFoals debut album was an angular piece of math rock, taking influences from afro sounds including high life. Here on their sophomore album they expand the horizons, to create something more cinematic. The result goes deeper into into the aquatic sounds of their earlier work, something that is reflected literally in the album’s artwork. There are moments here of real beauty… The initial plunge into cool waters on Blue Blood, the slow building terror of Spanish Sahara, the slippery layers of 2 Trees. Overall, Total Life Forever is the kind of album that feels like it gets a little better every time I hear it. I’d also argue it is likely the group’s best release - the perfect balance of scope, purity and artistry.
