Does a single-night live album tell you more about a band than a best-of live compilation would?

For sure. They essentially go on stage without a set list every night. They kind of ride the vibe of a show, which shows up on tape. It's cool hearing the ebbs and flows of a set. Way better than any sort of arbitrary compilation. (No offense "A Live One".)

I would say yes, there's a reason all the most famous live albums.Take place in one venue at one night, besides , maybe the kiss live albums , but i'm not for sure how much of those are even actually live so

Single show live is way better than compilations of live shows. Cant think of an exception.

Even better is a live album playing a studio album in its entirety. Shows like that were a big thing last year and maybe the year before. Patti Smith toured playing her first album, Death Cab for Cutie played Plans, etc. Not sure any have been made into live albums. My favorite album is Pink Floyd playing Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety live at Wembley. Albums that are conceived and or tested on the road before being recorded in the studio tend to work really well - think Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zepplin ll.

@Cousin-Cletus Totally agree. I'm sure pressure testing music in front of a live audience is a scary experience for artists, but the interaction between fans and the music can really push things in an interesting direction.
