From BlackPlasticWhat’s that? It’s the sound of getting fucked up to a backing of skateboards clattering down sun-baked asphalt, Nashville’s Be Your Own Pet seem to be in competition - play as fast and as dangerously as those falling off their boards. Coming off the back of their eponymous debut album, Get Awkward is better in every conceivable way. It sounds like vocalist Jemima Pearl entered the studio determined to have as much fun as possible. Album (arguably career) highlight Becky depicts Pearl breaking up with a friend in the most pedestrian high-school way, even whilst threatening to wait with knives after school. The song’s conclusion is ridiculous, inevitable and yet still brilliant. Sadly you don’t get that song on the American version, presumably because to a US audience, this song sounds like something that would actually happen. Elsewhere, Bitches Leave is sassy and threatening in a much cooler way, and Food Fight is the most aggressive song about hot dogs and a six year old’s birthday party I’ve ever heard. All in all, it’s a chaotic and intense way to spend 38-minutes. Angular, angry and basic.
