Discovery

by Daft Punk

From BlackPlasticMy son has recently got into Daft Punk, albeit via the medium of video games and, more specifically, Rocket League. It has been a pleasure seeing him get into their catalogue, even if my attempts to introduce him to the myriad of Daft Punk’s side projects, sister acts and remixes has been met with mixed response. Discovery was an album I loved on first listen… Romanthony, whose heavily filtered vocal provides the spine of One More Time, was an absolute favourite of mine at the time. As such I was primed for what the rest of the album had in store. I would argue Discovery was ahead of its time. It seems hard to believe now, but it was initial met with mixed response - seen as too commercial, and cheesy in places. Yet its influence is hard to overstate now - entire subgenres of house and pop reflecting elements of this one album. French Touch would not be the same without it, and Ed Banger and the late 00s French sound that followed would never have happened. It was really the Alive 2007 tour that lead to the widespread reappraisal, but nonetheless, Discovery likely remains the most complete realisation of Daft Punk’s artistic vision.
